Timeline of Sociology

Timeline of Early Sociology:

Research the sociological significance of your assigned topic. To do this you must understand the definition of sociology and the concept of human interaction.

Sociology: n.
The study of human social behavior, especially the study of the origins, organization, institutions, and development of human society.
Analysis of a social institution or societal segment as a self-contained entity or in relation to society as a whole.

Definition from answers.com http://www.answers.com/topic/sociology

For more information about writing in sociology and creating a sociological argument I have linked a UNC handout here.
 Research your topic
 Create a presentation
 Explain the historical significance of your topic
 Explain the sociological significance of your topic

The Presentation:
•PowerPoint is preferred, but not required.
•Your presentation should be neat and orderly. Do NOT cram everything on one slide or write an essay on a piece of poster board.
•Font should be no smaller than 30 on a PowerPoint or other presentation program.
•Document your sources. (GOOGLE is not a source. The actual web-address where you found information is the source. Do not offer a search engine as your source.) Use more than one source.
•We can read. Present without reading everything to us.
•Be able to answer questions about your event and its significance.
•Be prepared to present on MONDAY 9/13/2010
•Presentation should be between 3 and 5 minutes.
•Save all work on a flash drive. You will not have access to the Internet when presenting.

Late equals -25.

Writing and Sociology

This handout introduces you to the wonderful world of writing sociology. Before you can write a clear and coherent sociology paper, you need a firm understanding of the assumptions and expectations of the discipline. You need to know your audience, the way they view the world and how they order and evaluate information. So, without further ado, let’s figure out just what sociology is, and how one goes about writing it.

Sociology Students: Don’t forget your writing assignment!

Write two or three paragraphs explaining how a sociological imagination can assist you in your everyday life.
Consider:

    seeing people as social beings
finding balance between your personal desires and the demands of your social environment
viewing your own life within a larger social and historical context
